Coincidentally, Aidan Turner previously filmed at Chavenage House (The Priory in Rivals)
Story
It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as a long-standing rivalry between them comes to a head. The same location was used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC adaptation of Poldark.
This is far from the truth, Cooper satirises the Cotswolds upper middle class with an iron fist and has always had a knack for comedy, characters and entertaining plots
Jilly Cooper had a terrifying version of Riders in the 90s, but since then TV has avoided her as ‘bonkbusters’, with critics saying the Jilly Cooper novels were dated and silly. In many ways, her work has been more like Restoration comedy than Carry On, where the characters are much more developed and have more inner lives than you might think.
The changes are minor, and really do more to open up the era and politics
Now comes RIVALS from Disney, who boast a stellar cast, and the good news is that it’s a great watch, yes, full of bad moments, booze, and bums, even the occasional Willy. The triumph, though, is that it has the budget and the time to do justice to the feel and spirit of the original book.
He does a truly creditable job
Bella Maclean is brilliant in the central role of Tagie, and Alex Hassel is superb as Rupert, a role that’s impossible to cast because no one in history could be the character that Cooper created – part villain, part Adonis, part whining child. But the real star of this is the ensemble of great character actors, Emily Atack, Danny Dyer, Katherine Parkinson, who give some of the best performances of their careers.
I really enjoyed it
The 80s soundtrack is the thing, and Rivals is a real triumph for Disney. It’s fun, it’s frothy, but there’s a deeper undertone that elevates it above a typical film and gives us hope that we’ll see much more from this team and universe in the future.
