Story
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, meets an oligarch’s son and impulsively marries him
As soon as the news reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened when her parents travel to New York to annul the marriage. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian gives a brief overview of the 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Honora and the dangerously erotic Mercy. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said that director Sean Baker will act out different sexual positions with his wife, producer Samantha Kwan, to show the actors what he wants them to do. Igor: PLEASE! ENOUGH!
Mentioned in the film “Close-up: Anora” (2024)
SCREAM!. Sean Baker returns to his cabin to explore the dark corners of society. It’s an unbearable love story, a passionate look at how a young woman struggling to make ends meet as a sex worker in Brooklyn sees her hopes and dreams become shockingly real when she meets her Prince Charming, the son of a Russian oligarch. Their chemistry is instant and mesmerizing. Their life changes dramatically when they marry.
This is one of the best performances of the year
Mikey Madison is wonderful as a young woman whose fairy-tale dream comes true. But unlike Elizabeth Taylor in “Butterfield 8” or Elizabeth Shue in “Leaving Las Vegas,” here the main character never becomes a classic hooker with a heart of gold. She remains tough as nails, full of rage and ready to strike the next blow until the very end. Though she never becomes a raunchy person, her resolve never weakens. She knows how to stand up for herself and fiercely rejects those who fail in this regard.
Many called it partly a comedy
Just when you think you know where it’s going, your expectations change and it turns out to be a much more complex film with a sobering reality at its core. To be honest, it’s a bit of a stretch, despite the dark sense of humor. Warning: this movie is quite taxing on the psyche. You might be exhausted by the end of it. But this is an unforgettable movie that will leave you in awe.
