Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space
Story
While searching the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. “Alien: Romulus” stars Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced reveal why director Fede Alvarez used practical effects and animatronic xenomorphs to terrorize his cast. Director Fede Alvarez contacted the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used whenever possible to help the later visual effects work. When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all their blood hangs in the air in long blobs. Zero gravity in real life makes liquids form spheres, not spread out in long, flat pieces like in the movie.

The 20th Century Studios brass band freezes and becomes ominous, as in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene. The logo itself experiences a discharge of static electricity and turns green. Featured in Nerdrotic: The Acolyte: Force is Female CONFIRMED? Death of Theaters – The Real BBC @MauLer @HeelvsBabyface (2024). My first takeaway was that there just wasn’t anything to get emotionally invested in, the story or the characters. The characters just seemed like cardboard cutouts with no story arcs to them, no real emotional content to connect with.
The monster breaks free and starts killing everyone
The story was pretty much recycled from the previous Alien movies. As a result, there was no build-up of tension or drama. You know pretty much exactly how it’s going to end soon after you’re introduced to the characters and the situation. Oh, and let’s disparage how evil corporations are, just to add some flavor. Which, as it was done, came off more as an eyesore than something to connect with. The only positive thing about the movie was the special effects.
The “space” ones, that is
The creature effects were more than seen in any previous film. But they did a great job with the physics of the shots in space. These were a lot of fun to watch. But that was about it. Nothing new, nothing to surprise anyone. One more “Alien” movie, one at a time.
